What Our Service Includes
1. Deep, Even Oiling for Long-Term Leather Health
We begin with a full, even coat of premium oil applied by hand with a brush so the leather absorbs exactly what it needs.
- One coat is ideal for most saddles.
- Severely dry leather may require a second coat; we determine this after allowing the first coat to fully absorb.
- If the leather drinks oil unevenly, we correct it to ensure consistent strength and longevity.
2. Full Saddle Soap Conditioning
After oiling, every smooth-out surface is conditioned with high-quality saddle soap.
- Using soaked and wrung sheepskin, we build a rich white lather and hand-rub it into the leather until it fully absorbs.
- This deep conditioning restores suppleness, boosts moisture retention, and brings back the rich finish Burns Saddles are known for.
3. Professional Finishing Based on Saddle Type
Roughout Saddles
Roughouts don’t receive a traditional finish coat, but we apply Duff’s Cream for added protection and a clean, refreshed appearance.
Smooth-Out Leather
Smooth-out saddles receive an RTCB Natural Sheridan-Resistant Finish — a protective, lacquer-like coat that:
- Shields from sun damage
- Repels moisture
- Adds a subtle, polished shine
This keeps your saddle looking sharp and performing in all conditions.
Why Choose Burns?
Because nobody cares for a saddle like the people who build them.
During your cleaning and oiling service, our craftsmen:
- Inspect your saddle from top to bottom
- Identify early signs of dryness, wear, or structural concerns
- Call you if anything needs attention before it becomes a costly repair
This isn’t a quick wipe-down. It’s a full annual wellness check by the same kind of experts who craft Burns Saddles to last for generations.
Annual Care, Done Right
We recommend professional cleaning and oiling once a year to keep your saddle strong, safe, and comfortable for both horse and rider.

Proper Storage Matters
Even a well-maintained saddle can be damaged by improper storage.
- Don’t place your saddle on the ground or hang it incorrectly. Gravity can distort the seat and pull the fenders out of shape.
- Store your saddle on a proper stand or rack so the tree and leather rest as they were designed to.
Extra Care Tips from Our Makers
- Use horn wraps (mulehide, rubber, or mulehide-style) to protect your horn, and replace them before they wear through.
- Don’t wait for cracking or swelling, early care prevents expensive repairs.
- Treat your saddle like your horse: consistent care keeps everything performing its best.
